US Governor and State Elections: America's Chief Ministers

Each of the 50 US states directly elects a governor, usually for 4 years, to run the state government. In 2026, 36 states chose governors. Here is how it works and why a US governor is closer to our Chief Minister than to our Governor.
MeaningWho Is a US Governor and How Is the Governor Elected?
The US is a federation of 50 states, and each has its own constitution, legislature, courts and an elected chief executive called the governor. The governor runs the state government, proposes the budget, signs or vetoes state laws, commands the state's National Guard and can pardon state crimes. So an American governor is like our Chief Minister, but elected directly by the people of the whole state, not chosen by the majority in the Assembly.
🏠 Everyday analogy
Imagine if voters of Rajasthan elected their Chief Minister directly on a separate ballot, and the MLAs on another. The CM could belong to one party and the Assembly majority to another.
🇮🇳 Real Indian example
In 2026 Texas elected Democrat Gina Hinojosa as governor, while the Texas legislature stays under Republican control. That split is normal in the US.
| Point | Detail |

| When elected | 36 in midterm years (like 2026), 11 in presidential years (Vermont and New Hampshire vote in both), 5 in odd years: Virginia, New Jersey, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi |
| Deputy | Lieutenant governor, often elected separately |
State electionsState Elections in the US: Legislatures, Elected Officials and Ballot Measures
- State legislatures: 49 states have two Houses (a state Senate and a House or Assembly). Nebraska has just one House, and its members are elected without party labels.
- Many offices are elected that India appoints: attorney general, secretary of state (who runs elections), state judges in many states, sheriffs and school boards.
- Ballot measures: in about half the states citizens can put a law or constitutional change to a direct public vote (referendum or initiative), something India does not have.
- Why it matters nationally: state legislatures draw House district maps (gerrymandering) and states run the elections, so control of states shapes control of Congress.
