US Vice President: What the Number Two Actually Does

The Vice President is elected on one ticket with the President, chairs the Senate, breaks 50-50 ties and becomes President if the office falls vacant. JD Vance holds the post today.
RoleWhat Does the US Vice President Do?
The Vice President is elected together with the President as a pair, called the "ticket". Voters cannot pick a President from one party and a VP from another. The VP has two jobs written in the Constitution: preside over the Senate and cast the deciding vote when it is split 50-50, and take over as President if the President dies, resigns or is removed. JD Vance is the 50th Vice President, since 20 January 2025.

🇮🇳 Real Indian example
India's Vice President also chairs the upper House (Rajya Sabha), an idea taken from the US. But India's VP is elected separately by MPs, not on a joint ticket. C.P. Radhakrishnan became India's 15th Vice President on 12 September 2025.
