Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk is in India from 21 to 23 October 2026, the first visit by a Polish Prime Minister since 2010. He and Prime Minister Modi agreed to double trade by 2030 and to work together on defence, AI and green technology. Here is what was agreed, the 80-year-old story behind the friendship, and why it matters for India.

What happened on 22 October 2026
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk held delegation-level talks at Hyderabad House, New Delhi, on 22 October 2026. Tusk came with about 100 business leaders. The two sides exchanged four agreements and set a goal to double bilateral trade from about $6.3 billion by 2030, using the India-EU Free Trade Agreement, which both want signed and ratified soon. They agreed to deepen cooperation in defence, AI, green technologies, critical minerals, space and semiconductors, and to revive their working group on agriculture. The war in Ukraine was also discussed. Private companies signed about half a dozen deals in space, railways, mining and coal gasification. Tusk goes to Bengaluru on 23 October.
On the same day, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is on an official visit to Azerbaijan (23 October) to review bilateral ties.

Think of Poland as India's doorway into Central Europe. It is a fast-growing EU economy with strong industry and a big defence budget. When the India-EU trade deal comes into force, Indian goods can enter Poland and the whole EU more cheaply, and Polish firms can build factories in India.
🏠 Everyday analogy
It is like two shopkeepers in a big market who were friendly for years but rarely traded. Now they sign a deal to stock each other's goods and share a delivery van, because a new market-wide rule (the EU FTA) has made it cheaper.
🇮🇳 Real Indian example
A tractor-parts maker in Rajkot, close to Jamnagar where Polish children were sheltered in the 1940s, could supply Polish farm machinery firms, while a Polish defence company makes equipment in India under Make in India.
